Enrollments in professional science master’s (PSM) programs have seen a steady rise over the past several years.

PSM enrollments have grown over the past few years even though overall graduate enrollments have decline.  Increasing enrollments suggest the value of the PSM is growing as employers become more familiar with what PSM graduates can deliver.

Total enrollment in PSM programs topped 5,800 students in 2012.  Of those, 1,900 enrolled for the first time in 2012.

Women constitute 45% of total PSM enrollments.  Excluding international students, more than 25% of students are underrepresented minorities

International students represent 15% of total PSM enrollments.  Of the students who enrolled for the first time in a PSM program in 2012, 22% were international students.

Data were reported in the Council of Graduate Schools’ annual report of PSM enrollments and degrees awarded.  Actual numbers are likely higher, as the report includes only those programs opting to participate.

“The numbers speak to the reputation of the professional science masters and what PSM graduates uniquely bring to the table,” said Kevin Sightler, founding director of the Illinois PSM.  “The national trends reflect what we are experiencing with the Illinois program.  Employers are reaching out to connect with Illinois PSM interns and graduates; our reputation is growing.”
