Yatong “Yuki” Zhang is our final spotlight of the week.

Yuki is one of our Geographic Information Science (GIS) students and earned her B.S. from Michigan State University in the field of Environmental Geography. Her passion for combining environmental studies and GIS led her to numerous projects as an undergraduate. She worked at Disneyworld where she analyzed the environmental and climate issues occurring in the area. At Michigan State, she created maps of lakes to showcase fishing and boating boundaries, determine the risk of waterborne diseases on public health and more.

She spent one of her summers at the Henan Aero Geophysical Survey and Remote Sensing Center where she worked with UAVs to create land-use maps. This summer Yuki doing two internships, she started her summer back at the Remote Sensing Center’s Institute of Remote Sensing Technology. The second half of her summer has been spent at the Illinois State Water Survey office here in Champaign.

Long term, Yuki would like to work in GIS data analysis, urban planning or database creation in related to watersheds, diseases, and life expectancy.

Joseph Rahe, Agricultural Production student, kicks off this week’s student spotlights.

Joseph earned his B.S. in Crop Science right here at the University of Illinois. He is the owner/operator of Oakleaf Simmentals, his family cattle operation in Auburn, Illinois. Joe also worked as a Farm Hand/Inventory Manager for Ladage Seed Sales, and was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity.

The past few years, Joe has worked for Monsanto which he continues to do this summer as a Technology Development Field Assistant. Last year, he was in charge of the Monsanto fields for the Farm Progress Show held in Decatur. He has developed a few new protocols and time-saving techniques in his role as well. Joe's ultimate goal is to work in the seed industry in the area of agronomy research.

Our final spotlight of the week is Kaixian Yang, Geographic Information Science (GIS) student.

Kaixian earned her B.S. in Geographic Information Science from East China Normal University and the University of Cincinnati.  She performed quite a bit of GIS research work as an undergraduate including global vegetation change analysis work at the Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences, where she also published a paper. Here in the United States, she served as a Research Assistant for the Tong Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati and as a Researcher Services Students Assistant for the University of Cincinnati Library.

Currently, Kaixian is working for the Illinois State Water Survey/Prairie Research Institute here in Champaign. Eventually, Kaixian would like to work as a GIS analyst in the public health, transportation or urban planning sectors.

Sai Ram Chandra "Sai" Veerasaiva earned his B.S. in Agricultural Sciences from Angrau University in Tirupati, India. He is currently working towards earning his M.S. in Bioprocessing and Bioenergy.

During his undergraduate, Sai held numerous internships related to the agriculture industry, both in the lab and in a rural work-study program. He has experience both in the field and in the lab working with cell culture, soil testing, field trials and more. During these studies, he realized he wished to pursue a graduate degree and was interested in Bioprocessing and Bioenergy.

As a graduate student, Sai has been learning both the science behind bioprocessing, but also business aspects. His courses peaked his interest in ethanol manufacturing and the research and development it entails. This summer, Sai is working firsthand with ethanol production at Pacific Ethanol in Pekin, Illinois where he is a process and technical support intern.

Sanjana – Sanjana Moitra, Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) student is today’s spotlight.

Sanjana earned her Bachelor of Technology in Food Technology at Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi in her home country of India. She has participated in a couple of research projects with FICCI Research and Analysis Center in Delhi. She also has numerous internships under her belt including fruits and vegetable assurance lab intern and milk quality assurance lab intern both at Mother Dairy Fruits and Vegetables, and Food Quality Assurance Lab Intern at Haldriam Snacks. Her career goal is to work in quality assurance and safety upon graduation in the confectionary, beverage, or meat sectors. This summer Sanjana is getting to do just that at Kemps, LLC a Dairy Farmers of America company. She is getting US knowledge of quality assurance and compliance.
