The first Student Spotlight of the week is Juhi Tomar, Food Science and Human Nutrition Student.

Juhi earned her Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering from Anna University in India. During her undergraduate studies, she performed research on BPA for her undergraduate thesis project and did an internship with Yokogawa Engineering in Singapore. After graduating with her B.T. degree, Juhi worked as a Business Analyst in Bangalore before deciding to switch her education focus to Food Science. Her interests in food chemistry, product development, processing, and quality led her to work this summer as a research assistant in the Engeseth Laboratory here on campus. Juhi encourages students to start their internship searches early and don’t underestimate the power of LinkedIn.

Today’s Student Spotlight is Jelita Pertiwi, one of our Agricultural Production students focusing on Crop Production.

She earned her B.S. in Crop Sciences right here at the University of Illinois but her interest in agriculture started when she was a child. Her main interest is in plant breeding and she hopes to create high quality and quantity crops for developing countries. During her undergraduate studies, she was given the opportunity to work in a variety of labs on campus giving her knowledge in everything from prairie cord grass to small grains. All of her classroom and hands on knowledge has led her this summer to Dow AgroSciences where she is working as Plant Breeding Intern. Jelita is taking the fall semester to study abroad in France and will continue her Agricultural Production studies in the spring semester and plans to graduate in May 2018.

Hao Zhang is our mid-week student spotlight and is working towards his M.S. degree in our Geographic Information Science program.

He comes to the program with numerous GIS related projects under his belt from his undergraduate studies at Zhejiang Agriculture and Forestry University in his home country of China. Hao’s main interest is in programming and he is spending this summer as a Web Developer and Data Visualization Intern at CEB, a Gartner company. CEB is a best practice insights and technology company, with a Data Innovation Center in our Research Park. When he is not working on a project, Hao enjoys the fine arts, including film, painting, and music.

Our first spotlight of the week is Maria “Vicky” Baraldi, Food Science and Human Nutrition graduate student.

Vicky is involved in many organizations and activities on campus including the Illinois Leadership Program and the Student Advising on Graduate Education (SAGE) group. She graduated from Ibero-American University with a B.S. in Food Engineering and worked for L’atelier Du Chocolat and Kua Mex Foods before starting her M.S. degree. This summer she is combining her science and business skills at Campbell’s Soups in Camden, New Jersey as a Beverage Product Development Intern. Vicky’s main interests are in research and development, formulation and marketing of food products. Vicky is advised by Dr. Nicki Engeseth, Professor of Food Chemistry and Associate Head for Graduate Programs in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.

The final spotlight of the week is Bethany Sullivan, Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) student.
During her undergraduate studies at Concordia University in Wisconsin, Bethany realized she wanted to pursue a career in the food industry. Coming from a Chemistry background, she knew she could use her applied science skills in the research and development field. This summer she is doing just that in Beloit, Wisconsin at Kerry Ingredients where she is the beverage department research and development intern. In this role, Bethany gets to prepare samples for beverage tastings and sensory panels, take measurements in the laboratory and work in the pilot plant.
