Our final Technical Systems Management student spotlight is Mary Dickerson. 

She earned her B.S. in Animal Sciences right here at the University of Illinois with a dual minor in Chemistry and Food and Environmental Systems. As an undergraduate, she also spent a semester studying abroad in Australia. Mary’s love of animals and travel led her to internships in the Netherlands, overseeing dairy cattle and in Fiji, where she worked with sea turtles and coral replanting. She also has veterinary assistant and adoption counseling experience via Creature Comforts Animal Hospital and Almost Home Foundation.

Her interest is still in animal health and welfare, as well as environmental systems and sustainability. She is combining that passion for animal welfare and systems this summer as a Technical Services, Manufacturing Sciences Intern, at Elanco Animal Health in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Our first Student Spotlight of the week is Chia-Yen “Josephine” Hsieh, Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) student.

Josephine completed her undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University earning her B.S. in Food Science and Technology. As an undergraduate, she worked as a research assistant conducting phytochemical extractions and analysis, participated in a food product development project, and held two internships with Global Mart Foods back in her home country of Taiwan.  Her career interests lie in research and development within the food and beverage industry, as well as food chemistry and food analysis. This summer, Josephine is getting a taste of her planned career path working as a carbohydrate technology intern at Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) in Decatur, Illinois.

Chandler Bruns is our first Agricultural Production student spotlight.

Chandler earned her Bachelors Degree in Agriculture Leadership and Science Education with a minor in Food and Agribusiness Management here at the University of Illinois. As an undergraduate student, she served as a receptionist for the University of Illinois Men’s Basketball Team and held internships with the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development Unit and Bayer Crop Science. She has also worked as a marketing intern with Agrible, inside the University of Illinois Research Park. Outside of school and internships, Chandler participated by helping with Ag in the Classroom and served a term as Miss Champaign County Fair Queen.

The main focus of her graduate studies is crop production and marketing. This summer, Chandler is getting to utilize her farm background and educational at Growmark in Bloomington, Illinois where she is working as an agronomy marketing intern.

Nathan – Meet Nattapon “Nathan” Jaroenchai, Geographic Information Science (GIS) student and our next student spotlight.

Before coming to the University of Illinois for his M.S. degree, Nathan earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering from Chulalongkorn University in his home country of Thailand. Between his undergraduate graduation and starting his M.S. degree, Nathan worked as a support consultant for Reuters Software, Business Development for Alpha Founders and as a product associate for Garena Thailand. He is also a skilled website developer, his portfolio can be seen at This summer, Nathan is utilizing his computer engineering, website design, and GIS knowledge at the CyberGIS Center here on campus where he serves as the Website Coordinator.

Dhwani – Our second student spotlight of the week is Dhwani MistryFood Science and Human Nutrition.

Dhwani completed her undergraduate studies at the Institute of Chemical Technology in her home country of India. She graduated first class with distinction with her Bachelor of Technology degree in Food Engineering and Technology. As an undergraduate, Dhwani held numerous internships including Quality and Food Safety at Mondelez International, Marketing Intern at Emami Limited, and Research and Development at Roha Dyechem. She also completed a formulation project at her university her senior year. Her previous experiences and graduate studies helped Dhwani land her current internship in Research and Development at Campbell Soup Company in their Garden Fresh Gourmet division.
