Robert “Cary” Adams is one of our Bioprocessing and Bioenergy M.S. students.

Cary earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri in the area of Animal Sciences. As an undergraduate, Cary was quite involved with the Sigma Nu Fraternity where he served as Sentinel and Social chair. He has a variety of work experience in sales, administrative duties, and serving as a teaching assistant. Cary’s career goal is to work in research and development within the bioenergy sector so he can be an integral part of tomorrow’s energy solutions. This summer he is getting a taste of working in the sustainability sector working for the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) here in Champaign.

The final Student Spotlight of the week is Matsen Dziedzic, Technical Systems Management student.

Matsen earned his bachelors degree right here at the University of Illinois in Technical Systems Management. Since his freshman year, Matsen has been a member of the University of Illinois Men's Track and Field team where he competes in the shot put and hammer/weight throw. This past year he placed 7th in the weight throw and 9th in the hammer throw at the Big Ten Championships. When he wasn't in the classroom or competing, Matsen was running his small firewood business, working as a sales consultant or completing an internship with Klein Tools as their international sales intern.

Matsen's career goal is to work in a manufacturing or production industry in a managerial or consulting role. This summer, he is getting a first-hand look at this potential career path as he works for Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) as an Agriculture Operations Management intern.

Today's student spotlight is Xin "Josy" Zong, Food Science and Human Nutrition student.

Josy earned her B.S. in Food Science and Technology from Nanjing Agriculture University in her home country of China, where she graduated with honors. She is fluent in Chinese and English and also speaks a bit of Korean and Spanish. During her undergraduate studies, she served as the president of her class and served as the Minister of Publicity for the Model UN. She also held numerous internships including research at the Jiangsu Administration of Quality Supervision and Inspection, serving as a TA within in her department, and as a marketing intern for Bosch Investment Co. LTD. Her main interest is in research and development for food and beverage companies. This summer, Josy is getting to try her hand in R & D at RXBAR, a whole food protein bar company based out of Chicago, IL.

Guimin “August” Zhu, is our next student spotlight and is working towards his M.S. degree in Geographic Information Science (GIS).

 

August earned his B.S. in Geographic Information Systems from Peking University in his home country of China. During his undergraduate studies, he participated in two exchange programs, one in Hong Kong and the other with the University of California in Berkeley. He also worked for the Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS in Beijing as a GeoSoft Laboratory Research Assistant. August’s main interest lie in urban transportation and agriculture, specifically using remote sensing in agriculture to provide assessment, quantitative cultivation, and disaster precaution services. This spring, August started working for Dow AgroSciences, a large agriculture company, inside the University of Illinois Research Park as a GIS intern

Our first Student Spotlight is Regan Frieling, Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) student.
 
Regan completed her undergraduate studies right here at the University of Illinois earning her B.S. in Food Science and Human Nutrition with a minor in Chemistry. As an undergraduate, she was awarded the Bronze Tablet, the highest award given at the University to the Top 3% in each graduating class. During her studies, she worked as a research assistant in the Engeseth Laboratory and did internships with Prinova Group USA and Imbibe Inc. Her career interests lie in product development as well as research and development within the beverage industry, specifically in nutrition. This summer, Regan is getting a taste of her planned career path working as a nutrition research and development intern at PepsiCo in Barrington, Illinois.
