Our midweek spotlight is Rachael Geiger, Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) student.

Rachael comes to the Illinois PSM program with a unique double major in Biology and English with a Religious Studies minor from Bradley University in Peoria. Rachael’s unique background led her into science communication, where she worked as a communications intern for the Long Lab at the Institute for Genomic Biology and as an editorial assistant for the Global Change Biology and GCB Bioenergy group during her first year of graduate study. This summer, Rachael is focusing more on the food industry by working for two different groups at Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) in Decatur. Her first project is with the beverage team where she works solely on research and development while her second project with the PTL snack bar team combines R & D and regulatory policy.

It is time to kick off our final week of 2nd-year student spotlights with Yujin Joung, Agricultural Production student with a focus in food animal production.

Yujin started her animal science journey here at the University of Illinois, where she earned her B.S. in Animal Sciences with a minor in Chemistry. While earning her undergraduate degree, Yujin went back to her home country of Korea to complete a few veterinary medicine related internships. During the school year, she worked in various labs across the Champaign-Urbana campus as well. Yujin’s main interest lies in veterinary medicine and she plans on applying to Vet School after completing her M.S. degree. This summer she is interning at A & E Animal Hospital here in Champaign. Best of luck to Yujin as she pursues a career as a DVM.

Wei-Chieh “Jesse” Tsao, Food Science & Human Nutrition student is today’s spotlight.

Jesse earned his B.S. in Agricultural Chemistry from National Taiwan University, where he was involved in numerous contests and projects. He was given the opportunity to work not only in food science, but consulting and trading as well. All of these experiences led Jesse to pursue his M.S. in the Illinois Professional Science Master’s program where he could combine his passion for food and business. This summer Jesse is working for Abbott Nutrition in the University of Illinois Research Park as a Lipid Oxidation Intern and worked in the Engeseth Laboratory here on campus. Jesse’s career goal is to merge is interests and work in marketing for a food company.

Our next Student Spotlight is Faith Kemme, Agricultural Production student focusing on Crop Production.

Faith grew up on her family farm in Central Illinois and she knew since she was little that she planned to study and work in the agricultural field. She earned her B.S. in Agricultural and Consumer Economics, with a crop and soil management minor right here at the University of Illinois. During her undergraduate studies, Faith completed a sales and marketing internship with CNH Industrial, a technology and development internship with Monsanto, and assisted on her family farm. All of her experiences led her to pursue her M.S. in Agricultural Production. Faith is interning this summer at Wendte Farms, a family owned farm in Altamont, IL where she is getting to experience all aspects of running and managing a grain operation.

Yujian “Det” Yang is our ninth Geographic Information Science (GIS) student spotlight of the summer.

His interest in GIS can be traced back to when he was in high school and enjoying his courses in geography and computer science. Det decided to turn his interest into a career by gaining his B.E. in Geographic Information Science from China University of Geosciences. He completed numerous projects during his undergraduate experience, including his final project of analysis of emotional space-time distribution based on social media data. It is no surprise that some of Det’s main areas of interest include data science, social media analytics, and data visualization. This summer, Det is using his skills as a GIS intern for Dow AgroSciences here at Research Park
