Look Back: 2018 PSM Poster Showcase

A month has passed since our 2018 Poster Showcase. 23 students presented their summer internship experiences for members of the U of I faculty, staff and industry partners.

Agricultural Production

 

Chandler Bruns was an Agronomy Marketing Intern for GROWMARK & Illinois Farm Bureau's 4R4U Nutrient Stewardship Partnership. She provided marketing support for the statewide initiative and was even featured on the news. 

Brittney Madison spent her summer as a Sales Intern for AgriGold where she served performed logistical, agronomic, and marketing activities to support the companies' corn and soybean sales. 

 

Joseph Rahe worked for Monsanto (recently acquired by Bayer) this summer as their Technology Development Field Assistant. In his role, he conducted small plot and strip trial research as well as disease and fertilizer management research.

 

 Yueqi "Yoki" Zhao was a Rotational Intern this summer for a regional nursery. She managed the supply chain of the production line and investigated plant health.

 

 

Bioprocessing & Bioenergy

Robert "Cary" Adams spent his summer as a Biofuels Research Intern for the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center where he analyzed biomass, performed experimental testing on biofuel combustion, and provided outreach.

 

Sai Ram Chandra "Sai"Veersaiva was a Process Development and Technical Support Intern for Pacific Ethanol. He improved the process of their corn wet milling plant and provided cost recovery of co-products in corn products. Sai is planning to return to Pacific Ethanol for a full-time position in December.

Haotian Xiao worked for the Gene Therapy Program at Pennsylvania State University this summer as a summer research intern. In his role, he performed data analysis, cell culture and image processing. 

 

Food Science & Human Nutrition

Regan Frieling worked at PepsiCo as their R&D Beverage Intern. She tested the capabilities of new ingredients for the fortification of beverages.

 

 

Kelsey Hamm was a Research Intern this past summer for Synergy Flavors, Inc. In her role, Kelsey researched process optimization, flavor encapsulations, shelf life, and protein-flavor interactions.

 

Chia-Yen "Josephine" Hsieh worked at Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) as a Research Intern. She developed and optimized the method of a lipid oxidation analytical tool.

 

Calvin Hsu spent his summer as a Research and Development Intern Intern for Del Monte Foods, Inc. He performed preliminary benchtop formulation and pilot plant scale production of beta test samples.

 

Laura Lopez Ortiz completed her food science internship at Autumn Berry Inspired where she improved product recipes, operated tasting events, conducted ingredients research, and contributed to a new product proposal.

 

Dhwani Mistry worked for Garden Fresh Gourmet, a  Campbell Soup Company as their Research & Development Intern. She crafted product specifications, analyzed the effects of processing conditions on final products, worked on cost reduction projects and RFPS.

 

Sanjana Moitra was a Quality Assurance and Compliance Intern this past summer for Dairy Farmers of America. Her position was located inside of Kemps. In her role, Sanjana completed risk assessment, proofed product labels and assisted with RSPO certification.

 

Xin "Josy" Zong worked at RXBAR in Chicago as a Research and Development Intern. She solved problems for existing products, including their nut butter and assisted with new product development.

 

Geographic Information Science

Tong "Thom" Gong spent his summer as a Data Science Intern for Corteva Agriscience at the University of Illinois Research Park. He performed data management, processing, and visualization on geospatial models related to the Western Corn Rootworm.

 

Nattapon "Nathan" Jaroenchai interned with the CyberGIS Center here at the University of Illinois as their website coordinator. Nathan created responsive websites and user-friendly content management systems to showcase the projects and works of the CyberGIS Center.

 

Aaron King worked this past summer as a GIS Consultant for the Scholarly Commons inside the University of Illinois Library. He helped to solve a variety of student and faculty research problems related to maps and GIS.

 

Kaixian Yang completed her internship with the Illinois State Water Survey inside the Prairie Research Institute as a GIS intern. She created GIS building footprints using LiDAR data, cleaned and classified the data.

 

Yatong "Yuki" Zhang did two internships this summer, working as a Remote Sensing Center and GIS Intern for the Illinois State Water Survey and as a GIS Intern for the Institute of Remote Sensing Technology in Henan Aero Geophysical Survey. For ISWS she created GIS building footprints using LiDAR data. At Henan, she created maps based on remote sensing imageries and established a platform for ArcGIS application secondary development.
 
Guimin "August" Zhu served as a GIS Intern this past summer for Corteva Agriscience at the University of Illinois Research Park. His project included multi-source crop data pipelines and pest management mapbook tool development. 

 

 

Technical Systems Management

 
Mary Dickerson worked for Elanco this summer at their headquarters outside of Indianapolis, IN as a Technical Services/Manufacturing Science Intern. She characterized growth medium for enzyme production through fermentation experiments.
 

Matsen Dziedzic was an Operations Management Intern this summer for Archer Daniels Midland (ADM). He managed the daily operations of the grain facility in Mound City, IL where he worked on everything from inventory, engineering, and employee management.
